Calligraphy is a kind of meditation

Because of the Coronavirus 2019. I have been staying in my hometown, a small village in Guilin, southern China for more three months. Quarantine is not easy for most people, as we’re used to social life. So when we can’t meet friends and drink coffee or tea with friends,  sometimes we may feel bored.

I’m very lucky, because I can still work online. Every day except for teaching online and translation work. I still have plenty of time to keep my body and mental health. I can walk on the country road without a mask, listen to the birds call, sit on the big rock and watch the river water running. Every day I also practiced calligraphy for two hours, then send my calligraphy classmates my artwork and received feedback.

This is my way to spend the quarantine life . I think it is not as difficult as most people think. The virus will finally go away, if we can’t do anything to help others, then just stay safe and healthy by ourselves. We can make good use of this time, and do something that we may want to try since long time ago. For example, I have made a  progress in calligraphy during this period.

I believe if you also practice Wu Juns Article in Wu Rangzhi Style Calligraphy, you’ll love it . Because the article written by Wu Jun (469-520AD) was very beautiful, and one of the best Calligraphers in Chinese history, Master Wu Rangzhi (1799-1870) rewrote it in Xiaozhuan style calligraphy with elegant strokes.

Here are the first several 4 sentences in this article :

4 sentences of wujun's article in wurangzhi calligraphy

(Note: ancient Chinese articles should be read from right to the left, and from upside to the bottom)

When written in modern Chinese characters, it says :

风烟俱净 fēng yān jù jìng , The wind and smoke scattered and disappeared,

天山共色 tiān shān gòng sè, The sky and the mountains turn to the same color

从流飘荡 cóng liú piāo dàng, I was drifting on the river,

任意东西 rèn yì dōng xī, just let it go, sometimes to the left and sometimes to the right.

The elegant stroke of Wu Rangzhi Style Calligraphy also perfectly fit the relaxing atmosphere as the article described. It looks like this two artists were writing about this small town I live in.
